What does a young lad of the tender age of fifteen want from life? In 1935, the author signed up for the Royal Navy and left his home in Hull for HMS Ganges, a training ship for ‘nozzers’ near Harwich. A picnic it wasn’t, and little did Ken Kent know what was in store for him when Hitler invaded Poland and plunged Europe into the turmoil of World War II. The author saw action against the Germans, the Italians and even the French, and sailed the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, as well as the cruel North Sea. He had the good luck to serve as a signalman on that indomitable warrior of the waves, HMS Warspite, and the bad luck to be on HMS Imogen when she was rammed and sunk off Norway by a sister ship, HMS Glasgow. But Ken was a survivor. This humorous and lively account of ten years in the Navy is a valuable record of everyday life in a service that has changed beyond belief. It is also a tribute to another survivor – HMS Warspite – never defeated in battle, and now at peace in Prussia Cove, Cornwall.

Interesting Memoir about his personal experiences, but doesn't get into any detail of the operations he was involved in. it a personal memoir not a history book, so you can forgive some of the inaccuracies. But as the author had served on the Warspite I was surprised that he claimed the Warspite was attacked by Italian frogmen in Alexandria along with the Queen Elizabeth. In fact it was Valiant and Queen Elizabeth that was attacked. Warspite had been badly damaged in the action off Crete (which he also fails to mention even though he mentions the cruiser and destroyers lost in that action) and was underway to Bremerton to be repaired.
Maybe the secrecy around the event was really that good!. also the author makes no mention of the impact of the loss of the Hood, which looms large in almost every other personal account of service n the RN that I have read.
Overall it gives a history of where the author was, but not a lot on what we was doing

This book brought back memories of my time in basic training ,in the Royal Navy I found it very accurate and entertaining .i never saw fights in the mess decks like the author described ,having said that I would recommend this as a must read book.
If you have a connection to England and the Royal British Navy then you might find this book interesting. It is a short presentation of Ken's recollections from his service during WWII.
Good read. RN or USN There are or rather were a lot of similarities of shipboard life during WW2. Now both Navies are as the author states at the end of his book.
